Spotlight on Cuba: interview with a local expert
February 20, 2025
Ah, Italy: a land of eternal riches, it’s a sensory delight for every kind of traveler out there. Whether you’re heading to Europe‘s “boot” to roam its mountains or medieval towns, sip its fine wines or soak up its fine art scene, you’ll always find something to suit your tastes. We caught up with Jean-Pierre, one of our in-destination partners, who offers top tips and recommendations based around his in-depth knowledge as a local expert in Italy.
Living in Italy has so many great aspects. The people here are incredibly friendly, always ready with a smile and willing to help. The relaxed way of life is a breath of fresh air; there’s no constant rush, and you really get to enjoy each day. The food is, of course, amazing – every meal feels like a celebration of flavors. Plus, you’re surrounded by culture everywhere you go, from historical landmarks to art in everyday places. It’s just a really enriching and pleasant place to be.
I’d recommend spending a day exploring a local market. Places like Ballarò in Sicily, Mercato Centrale in Florence, and Mercato Testaccio in Rome are fantastic options. These markets are also food halls where you can taste local delicacies and have an amazing self-managed food tour. It’s such a cool way to experience the culture. You get to see all the fresh produce, try regional specialties, and maybe even pick up some unique souvenirs. Plus, it’s a great way to interact with locals and get a feel for everyday life there. Just wander around, sample some food, and soak in the atmosphere. It’s simple but really gives you a taste of authentic Italy.
Take your time and not try to see everything. It’s tempting to pack your schedule, but Italy is best enjoyed slowly. Spend more time in fewer places, really soaking in the atmosphere and exploring off the beaten path. Wander through small streets, sit in cafes, and just observe the local life. This way, you’ll have a much richer experience and really get to know the character of each place. Plus, it’s way more relaxing and enjoyable than rushing from one tourist spot to the next.
First, the Amalfi Coast for its stunning coastal views and charming villages. It’s just incredible to drive along and stop at little towns like Positano and Ravello. Second, Florence – the birthplace of the Renaissance. The art, architecture, and vibe there are just unbeatable. Lastly, Rome, of course. There’s nothing like walking through history with the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Vatican all in one city. These are obviously the most visited places, so for a less touristy, more sustainable visit, I would add Sicily, Umbria, and Apulia. These regions offer incredible experiences with fewer crowds, showcasing authentic Italian culture and natural beauty.
It really depends on what you’re looking for. June is perfect if you love warm weather and lively atmospheres. October is great for cooler temperatures and beautiful fall colors. If you want to escape the crowds, March is ideal. The weather can be a bit unpredictable, but it’s much quieter and you can enjoy the sights without the usual hustle. Each of these times offers a unique experience of Italy.
Spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams), my favorite dish.
