The benefits of tailor-made travel
February 25, 2025
A dream destination for nature enthusiasts (but not just), Norway is a concentration of pure magic and wonder. Hugged by Sweden to one side and lapped by the waters of the Norwegian Sea to the other, it’s a narrow stretch of land, but this Scandinavian gem houses many marvels – from its surprisingly expansive fjords to its ancient Viking culture. Julia, our Norway travel expert, shares her top favorites about Norway, from visiting in the less-crowded fall months to experiencing the warmth and culture of the Lofoten Islands.
Exploring the south of Norway. This is an area that not many tourists visit, and that’s extremely nice in the spring, summer and fall. There are so many amazing locations to explore, and so much culture to enjoy in different cities, towns and villages along the southern coast – you will get a great feel for Norway along the way.
To experience Norway, the main thing you need to do is connect with nature. Outdoor activities are an essential part of Norwegian life, so hikes – even short ones – are always a good way to experience life like a local.
The northern lights in the winter season are amazing to experience, and the best of all is that they are never the same two nights in a row – so seeing them on separate occasions is always worth it and brings something different.
The different hikes you are able to take in the country are also incredible! While the most famous hikes are famous for a reason, there are so many lesser-known trails that provide amazing views. For those willing to drive, reaching them itself is always an experience.
Lastly, even though it has become a very popular location, spending time on the Lofoten Islands is always something special. The archipelago has so much history and quaint villages that you can really get into Norwegian culture there. The people are also very friendly, which makes for an even greater experience. It’s also a destination that can be enjoyed all year round – though summer is very popular there, even amongst Norwegians, so it can get a bit crowded!
Even though it is low season, I love Norway in the fall. It is still possible to hike and enjoy a lot of different activities in nature. Also, if you are lucky, you can already experience the northern lights. So to me, the fall season combines the best that Norway has to offer, with fewer crowds.
When you are visiting Norway, you must try Norwegian waffles and the chocolates from Freia! Also, it could be argued that the Kvikk Lunsj chocolate bar is a national treasure!
