Our locally-based Rwanda travel expert, Ninah shares the things that most inspire her about her home country, from the warm and welcoming nature of its people, to unforgettable encounters with mountain gorillas. What is your favorite thing about living in Rwanda?

Rwanda is a uniquely beautiful country, and not just because it is my homeland. Despite its difficult history, the people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. Known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, Rwanda boasts stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, including the Big Five, vibrant birdlife, and primates like gorillas and chimpanzees. Our rich culture and impeccable weather make it a perfect destination to explore year-round. Additionally, Rwanda is a safe and environmentally conscious country.

Lake Kivu, Rwanda

What’s one thing you would recommend someone visiting your country should do?

If I had to pick just one, my favorite place to visit in Rwanda would be Volcanoes National Park. I love trekking to see the gorillas or the rare golden monkeys, they’re incredibly cute and very used to people! Beyond the activities in the park, I find the area so peaceful. The views of the volcanoes, the winds, and the cheerful children waving and saying hello, even in the evening, I always look forward to that.

If you’ll allow me to add a second thing (consider this a bonus!), I would say Lake Kivu, specifically in Karongi. It’s the most picturesque and tranquil haven in Rwanda, where you can truly unwind and enjoy the views of the islands. Whether you prefer kayaking quietly on the crystal-clear waters or relaxing on a boat ride, it’s the perfect escape from the hustle of everyday life.

What piece of advice would you give a first-time visitor?

I’m fortunate to have traveled to different countries in Africa and Europe, and while every country is unique, Rwanda is very special. When visiting Rwanda, spend time with the people and you will leave inspired. Rwandans are very hard-working, resilient and friendly. Whether it’s visiting a cultural village, canoeing through the countryside of Virunga, experiencing a day in the life of a local artisan, or even spending a night in a local home for a deeper immersion – you’ll gain firsthand insight into Rwandan life.

Primate trekking is a must. Whether you observe chimpanzees, monkeys, or the gentle giants, spending time with a silverback gorilla in the jungle is an unforgettable experience. I’ve trekked gorillas over five times, and each encounter feels as new and awe-inspiring as the first.

Finally, don’t miss the chance to view the Big Five in the Akagera savannah and savor local dishes. My favorite is isombe and sambaza fish from Lake Kivu!

What would you say are Rwanda’s top travel highlights?

  • Exploring Kigali: Gain a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s history and remarkable progress through a comprehensive city tour. You’ll visit the historical sites, significant museums, and enjoy sightseeing that showcases Kigali’s modern growth and provides insight into the country’s inspiring development.
  • Gorilla trekking in the wild: Participate in a conservation milestone through gorilla trekking. This unique experience directly contributes to local communities, as 10% of all revenue from Rwanda’s parks supports these communities. Your visit also furthers the park’s ongoing gorilla conservation efforts.
  • Visiting Nyungwe National Park: This park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Africa’s most vital biodiversity hotspots. As one of the continent’s oldest rainforests, it’s home to an impressive array of wildlife, including up to 13 species of primates and over 300 species of birds, with around 30 species endemic to the Albertine Rift Valley.

Preparing isombe, a local Rwandan dish

What’s one local dish that everyone should add to their Rwanda travel checklist?

As mentioned previously, my favorite dish is isombe cassava leaf soup with rice. I also love sambaza fish, whether it’s deep-fried to crispy perfection or simmered in a flavorful sauce. I also enjoy beans and potatoes, particularly those grown in Kinigi near the volcanoes, as they have a delicious taste. When it comes to dining out, my favorite restaurant in Kigali is Repub Lounge. They serve outstanding soul food, and the ambiance is simply excellent.

When is the best time to visit Rwanda, in your opinion?

Rwanda has a pleasant climate and can be visited year-round, with average temperatures of 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius). The best times to visit are during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February. Even during the rainy seasons, the rainfall is not intense, making it possible for travelers to visit Rwanda and take advantage of lower prices and fewer crowds in November, March, April, and May.
