Interview with one of our local experts in Greece

|

Greece is a marvelous European destination for you to set your sights on. It’s a place of mystery-shrouded mountains and endless coastline (the longest of the continent, in fact), off of which thousands of islands pepper the deep blues of the Aegean. All this is entwined with ancient mythology and packed with cultural intrigue, with a great dose of Mediterranean sunshine thrown in for good measure. Here we speak to Alex, our local expert in Greece, who keenly shares with us his recommendations, personal favorites, and top tips for visiting his home country.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Greece?

Nature: nowhere else in the world have I found waters as clear and refreshing as the turquoise seas in Greece. They’re not just beautiful – they make you feel alive and calm at the same time.

Culture: Greece’s history is amazing, stretching back thousands of years. From ancient ruins to modern traditions, it’s a place where the past and present come together in fascinating ways.

Local life: life in Greece is special. Being at the crossroads of three continents has shaped a way of living that’s full of warmth, tradition, and a perfect balance between work and enjoying life.

What is the one thing you would recommend someone visiting your country should see or do?

I would recommend taking the time to explore a traditional village, away from the usual tourist hotspots. For example, visit the village of Apiranthos on the island of Naxos early in the morning. Stroll through its marble-paved streets and stop for a coffee at a small café where locals gather. This is where you can experience the true pace of Greek life, surrounded by breathtaking mountain views and authentic architecture.

Do you have one piece of advice you would give a traveler visiting your shores?

When visiting Greece, I’d advise you to try the local dining culture – don’t just eat, experience the food. Find a family-run taverna and take your time. Share meze dishes, like freshly grilled fish and stuffed vegetables with tzatziki and house wine.

What would you say are Greece’s top three highlights?

1. The Acropolis and Parthenon, Athens

A guided tour to a 2,500-year-old masterpiece is an unforgettable experience. The views of Athens from the top are stunning, and you’ll feel connected to the roots of art, democracy, and culture that shaped the world.

2. Santorini’s caldera

Santorini’s caldera is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The white villages on the cliffs and the amazing sunsets over the sea are magical. Walking the quiet streets in the morning or tasting local wine during sunset is a lifetime experience.

3. Meteora’s Monasteries, Mainland Greece

Meteora is both peaceful and breathtaking. The monasteries, built high on giant rocks, are incredible to see. Explore them and witness amazing views which will stay with you long after you leave.

You are famous for your food! What dishes would you recommend people try while visiting?

The iconic souvlaki – Greece’s street food. It’s grilled meat (usually pork or chicken), wrapped in pita bread with tomato, onion, and tzatziki. It’s simple, satisfying, and perfect for eating on the go.

As a local expert in Greece, when would you say is the best time to visit your country?

The best time to visit Greece is during the shoulder seasons, mid-April and May, or September and October. These months offer pleasant weather though sometimes unpredictable. Spring is perfect for exploring historical sites like Delphi and Meteora or hiking in places like Zagori. During fall, the seas are still warm to swim so destinations like Paros, Naxos, Milos, and Crete are ideal.
