Tales from TravelLocal: Jo’s family trip to Tromso, Norway
March 12, 2025
Brimming with possibilities yet still underrated and unexplored by many, Colombia is the place to turn to for your next South American escape. The options are plentiful, and anyone with an appetite for adventure and new discoveries will be well and truly catered for – whether you’d like to live it up in Bogotá, experience the unique traditions of its lesser-known heritage towns, follow aromatic coffee trails, or lace up your boots and venture into the great outdoors. Here, we chat to a local expert in Colombia, Andrea Morita, about her day-to-day as a travel specialist and what it is about her home country that makes her tick.
What I love most about my work is being able to share the magic of Colombia with travelers. My mission is to make people fall in love with my country by creating experiences they will remember for a lifetime. Every day, I learn from travelers, and I enjoy the process of crafting unique journeys that resonate with each person.
Happiness, passion, and resiliency.
I especially love sharing experiences where travelers can connect with local farmers and artists in their own environments. Visiting villages and feeling the authentic vibe of these places is one of my favorite things to offer.
When visiting local farms, travelers can learn about sustainability practices, from water management to replanting trees. We witness the return of species to their habitats and how small-scale farmers create sustainable ecosystems. These farms also showcase how they produce and share food within their communities, offering a holistic view of how sustainability impacts the environment and people alike.
An ideal itinerary begins in a major city, rich in history, culture, and museums, and then moves through charming villages like Villa de Leyva and Barichara, where colonial architecture thrives. From there, we explore vibrant cities like Medellín and the beautiful landscapes of the south, where Andean sculpture art and indigenous communities provide a unique cultural experience. Finally, the journey ends in Cartagena, a city bursting with history and literary inspiration.
The southern region of Colombia is often overlooked, but it’s a gem where Andean sculpture art meets indigenous traditions. Another fascinating area is where the Orinoco and Amazon regions merge, creating a stunning blend of landscapes. And then, of course, there are the lesser-known colonial towns that transport visitors back in time.
My top tip is to trust your local travel expert in Colombia. While online guides focus on the must-see highlights, we can take you to authentic places that truly represent the country. Time is often limited, and it’s easy to get caught up in tourist spots, but with the right guidance, you’ll discover the heart of Colombia.
Travel light and be open to long transfers and walks. Colombia’s rich geography requires a sense of adventure, with flights and longer journeys necessary to explore the diverse landscapes. Embrace the road and flow with it, as that’s the best way to truly experience Colombia.
