Our guide to Brazil’s wildlife

At TravelLocal, we believe that travel can – and should – make a positive impact. That’s why we are proud to support Wildlife Alliance through our Fund For Good initiative, which partners with organisations dedicated to protecting local environments, communities, and wildlife. A key player in the fight against illegal wildlife trade and protection of Cambodian wildlife, Wildlife Alliance is transforming both the landscape and the lives of endangered animals and local people.
From rescuing trafficked animals to rehabilitating them at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre (PTWRC), Wildlife Alliance’s work touches every corner of Cambodia. Their dedication to long-term conservation solutions, along with their focus on educating the public, makes them a perfect partner in our mission to promote responsible and meaningful travel. Together, we’re helping to protect Cambodia’s rich biodiversity for future generations.
One of Wildlife Alliance’s most inspiring stories involves a sun bear cub that was kept illegally as a pet. Found in poor condition, the cub was rescued and brought to PTWRC, where it received months of care and rehabilitation. The team worked diligently to prepare the cub for life in the wild, teaching it essential survival skills. Finally, the bear was released into a protected forest, free to roam as nature intended. This heartwarming story is just one example of how Wildlife Alliance is providing second chances for Cambodia’s wildlife.
In the bustling streets of Phnom Penh, macaques are frequently captured for sale or kept as pets. Wildlife Alliance’s Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team (WRRT) works tirelessly to intercept these animals before they can be sold. During one operation, WRRT rescued 20 long-tailed macaques, many suffering from malnutrition and poor treatment. These animals were brought to PTWRC, where they received vital medical attention and behavioural rehabilitation before being released into a safe, natural environment. This operation is part of the broader effort to combat the illegal wildlife trade in Cambodia.
Pangolins are critically endangered due to the demand for their scales and meat. In a groundbreaking rescue, Wildlife Alliance confiscated two Sunda pangolins from traders, bringing them to PTWRC for treatment and care. After their recovery, the pangolins were fitted with tracking devices and released into a secure, monitored area. This project not only saved these individual animals but also contributed to global efforts to better understand and protect this vulnerable species.
Saranik and Baray, two gibbons rescued from captivity as infants, spent years undergoing rehabilitation at PTWRC. With the help of Wildlife Alliance, they were taught essential skills like foraging and tree climbing. After years of preparation, the gibbons were released into the forests surrounding the Angkor temple complex, a safe and suitable environment for their long-term survival. Their successful release is a powerful reminder of Wildlife Alliance’s commitment to giving wildlife a second chance.
We know that responsible travel goes beyond simply visiting a destination – it’s about protecting and preserving the places we love. Through our Fund For Good, we proudly support Wildlife Alliance in their mission to protect Cambodian wildlife. From the rescue of endangered species to the rehabilitation of animals in need, Wildlife Alliance is making a real difference, and we’re honoured to be part of that journey.
Every donation, every operation, and every rescue matters. By working together, we’re helping to ensure that future generations can experience the richness of Cambodian wildlife in all its glory. We’re committed to exploring the world while making a positive impact, and we invite you to join us in this mission.
