Thailand vacations: A tale of two beaches

Thailand vacations
Enjoying Thailand’s stunning beaches on a budget can be difficult… difficult if you don’t fancy the full moon parties, banana pancakes and bucket cocktails, that is. For anyone looking for peace and tranquility without spending too much, Thailand can be a tricky place. So we asked our expert local partners, Andaman Discoveries, where they would go. Our criteria: beautiful, peaceful, low-key, great value. Here’s what they suggested for anyone considering the best Thailand vacations:
Koh Phra Thong, Andaman Coast, Thailand
Legend has it that pirates buried a precious golden buddha somewhere on Koh Phra Thong that remains hidden to this day. It could be under any one of the 15 kilometres of deserted, palm-fringed beaches, so we recommend forgoing the treasure hunt for some serious relaxation. Few people visit this island, which is quiet, low-key, and unspoilt as a result. Nature enthusiasts will love spotting the rare deer and giant storks that inhabit the island’s fields and wetlands, which are also home to delicate orchids and unusual tropical ferns. The waters around the island are sheltered and pristine, perfect for snorkelling.
Koh Ra Ecolodge, Andaman Coast, Thailand
Koh Ra Ecolodge is more of a complete destination than a beach resort, but we love it. Located on Koh Ra Island, a tiny speck off Thailand’s west coast, the lodge was opened as a green alternative to Thailand’s mass-market hotels. The accommodation is simple but comfortable, and there is simply no end of activities to choose from. Whether you want to spot wildlife in the jungle, sea-kayak, relax on the beautiful beach, or learn more about sustainable tourism at one of the lodge workshops, there is something here for you.
