5 of the most beautiful hikes in Europe

|

Europe stands as the ultimate playground for hikers visiting the continent: made up of over 40 countries, with 10 major mountain ranges and 504 national parks, there’s a lot of hiking territory to explore! From unique, narrow Levada trails in Madeira, to treks following the hypnotic turquoise waters of the Langarica Canyon in Albania, below we’ve listed five of the most beautiful hikes in Europe.

The Wolf Trail, Montenegro

Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 6.8km / 4.2mi
Elevation gain: 139m / 456ft
Average time: 2:30h

This varied circular hiking trail (often referred to as the ‘trail of numerous viewpoints’) is located in Lovćen National Park, Montenegro, and situated in the Dinaric Alps. This national park is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, characterized by rugged limestone mountains, deep valleys, and dense forests – it’s the ultimate outdoor paradise!

Well-marked and relatively easy, this trail is suitable for hikers of various skill levels. During the two-and-a-half hike that’s accessible from the coastal city of Kotor, you’ll walk under the shaded canopies of a birch forest, and admire the highest peaks in the region at a handful of scenic overlooks. Towards the end of the trail, you can find the former alpine village Dolovi, where historic houses are currently being rebuilt. Along the way, hikers may also encounter wildlife such as birds of prey, foxes, and possibly even wild wolves, though sightings are rare.

Levada Das 25 Fontes (PR6), Portugal

Difficulty: Moderate – Hard
Distance: 8.6km / 5.3mi
Elevation gain: 584m / 1,916ft
Average time: 3:30h

The Portuguese island of Madeira is home to forests, mountains and dramatic ridges and coastlines, rightly giving the island the image of a raw, rugged, outdoor haven. This paradise is home to some of the most beautiful and distinctive hikes in Europe! Unique to the island of Madeira, Levada trails allow hikers to follow the 3,000km of irrigation channels that were built during the 15th to 20th centuries to distribute water from the wetter regions of the island to the drier areas.

Today, the narrow paths that run alongside the Levadas are used by travelers as hiking trails, giving them the unique opportunity to explore the island’s incredible landscapes. The Levada Das 25 Fontes is probably one of the most iconic hikes the island offers, taking you through lush greenery and the famous Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The highlights along the way are the largest waterfall in Madeira, Risco, and the atmospheric 25 Fontes Waterfall which tumbles into a dreamy basin.

The West Highland Way, Scotland

Difficulty: Hard
Distance: 153.5km / 95.4mi
Elevation gain: 4,256m / 14,291ft
Average time: 42h

The West Highland Way is a world-famous, long-distance hiking trail located in Scotland, renowned for its stunning scenery, rugged landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. Along this trail, you’ll pass through diverse landscapes including forests, moorlands, lochs, and mountains! Most walkers hike the trail in four to eight days, but there are options open to you if you only have one or two days and want to attempt part of the trail. If you have limited time, we recommend hiking the section from Inveroran to the Kingshouse.

Scotland is home to breathtaking scenery, which is why this is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hikes in Europe. As well as enjoying panoramic views of iconic landscapes such as Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor, and Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, you’ll also encounter picturesque glens, cascading waterfalls, and strong mountain ranges. When planning a hike along the West Highland Way, it’s important to consider logistics such as essential gear, supplies and accommodation (and whether you’ll be tackling the trail alone or with a guide). Langarica Canyon, Albania

Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 12km / 7.5mi
Elevation gain: 622m / 2,041ft
Average time: 4h

The Langarica Canyon is located in the heart of Fir of Hotova-Dangëlli National Park in Albania – a true marvel that captivates visitors with its awe-inspiring beauty. Nestled within an incredible mountainous region, the canyon offers a mesmerizing blend of dramatic rock formations, cascading waterfalls, and serene pools that create a captivating and enchanting atmosphere.

One of the most remarkable features of the Langarica Canyon is the presence of thermal pools. These natural pools, filled with turquoise waters, provide a tranquil haven amidst the dramatic surroundings. Visitors can immerse themselves in the refreshing waters, relishing in their embrace while surrounded by the breathtaking vistas that encompass the canyons.

With several trails to choose from depending on your ability, you can take the path most suited to you. Regardless of the route you take, we recommend enjoying the warming waters of the Benja Thermal Baths, and visiting the Kadiut Bridge, an old Ottoman stone footbridge that marks the start of the Langarica Canyon – it’s the perfect photo opportunity!

Three Peaks of Lavaredo, Italy

Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 10km / 6.2mi
Elevation gain: 467m / 1,532ft
Average time: 3-4h

The Dolomites are undoubtedly one of the most stunning landscapes in Europe. In recognition of its outstanding natural beauty and geological significance, the Italian mountain range was even designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 2009. During the summer months (when the majority of the snow has melted off the mountain peaks), adventurers flock to this area to complete some of the most beautiful hikes!

The Three Peaks of Lavaredo form quite possibly one of the most iconic hikes travelers can complete when visiting the Italian Alps. Characterized by three distinctive, pyramid-shaped limestone peaks (as the name suggests), they offer breathtaking views from all angles! The peaks might be the star of the show, but you’ll also be treated to more spectacular scenes throughout the hike: tranquil alpine lakes, lush meadows dotted with wildflowers, and sweeping landscapes. This area can often get busy during peak season, so we recommend visiting in the shoulder seasons of spring or fall for a quieter experience.
